You or a friend or relative should call us on 01923 225437 as soon as possible for an emergency dental appointment. We are more likely to get you an appointment with the emergency dentist if you call us early in the day.

We appreciate that dental emergencies can happen at any time. If you have a dental emergency outside of our usual opening hours, you should call 111 who are available every day until 9.30pm.

Advice for common dental emergencies in Watford

Some of the more common dental emergencies are listed here along with tips on how to handle them and help ease any pain whilst waiting to see the emergency dentist.

Toothache

There are several reasons for toothache including tooth decay, gum disease and dental abscess. You may have pain, swelling and a fever.

If your toothache is persistent and you have any swelling you should call the emergency dentist.

Take paracetamol for the pain and try rinsing your mouth in salty water. Avoid eating or drinking anything that is very hot or cold.

Knocked-out tooth

Caused by trauma or injury, this is a frightening situation. You should call the emergency dentist as soon as possible as time is critical in attempting to save a knocked-out tooth.

Handle the tooth carefully – always by the crown and avoid touching the root. If possible, try to re-insert the tooth into your gum and hold it in place with a tissue or clean cloth.

If it’s not possible to re-insert the tooth, you should keep the tooth in a container of milk.

Broken, chipped or cracked tooth

You may experience a broken, chipped or cracked tooth from weakened enamel, a form of trauma or from biting down hard on an object such as a pen lid.

Take paracetamol for any pain whilst you wait to see the emergency dentist.

It’s important that you get dental treatment quickly to prevent further damage or risk an infection. After stabilising any pain, dental treatment may involve bonding, veneers or a crown depending on the severity of the damage.

FAQ's for Emergency Dentist

Will the emergency dental appointment be uncomfortable?

We aim to alleviate any pain that you are experiencing and so we may numb the area in your mouth using an injection.

Will I need to follow up the emergency dental appointment?

This will depend upon the nature of your dental emergency and the treatment that you receive with the emergency dentist. If you are suffering from a dental abscess, you may well need root canal therapy or an extraction. If you have a chipped or cracked tooth you may need more cosmetic dental treatment. A knocked-out tooth may require a form of restoration.

How can I help to prevent dental emergencies?

Sometimes, dental emergencies happen from a fall or accident and there is nothing you can do about that. Some dental emergencies like a toothache or dental abscess can be prevented from maintaining good oral hygiene and regularly visiting your dentist and hygienist.

I drove all the way from Nottingham to see Dr. Dar after my sister recommended her as the best, and she truly is! Dr. Dar was incredibly professional, took the time to go through my full medical history in detail, and explained all my options clearly in simple, non-clinical terms so I could easily understand everything. She’s genuinely amazing, and I couldn’t recommend her more highly.
